My Inspiration

I have lots of people that inspire me in the circus skills and hoop world and I try to show various individual videos by those people here on the blog all the time, but today I just felt the need to link you to the whole You Tube channel of Pam Theobold. Pam is a fantastic lady, who I admire greatly. She is suffering from osteoporosis and is using hooping to help strengthen her bones with exercise. She grabs hold of life and hoops it up until it is dizzy. She has shared a HUGE number of hooping tutorials on You Tube, for free. If you want to learn lots of new moves, and you need someone to break down in detail how each move works, I can recommend Pam's teaching style. She gives detailed explanations and shows you close up shots of grips and motions as she goes along. She is also mindful to inform you how the moves can impact on your body.

Here is an example of one of her tutorials

I say YAY for Pam Theobold! You are a fantastic tutor and a great inspiration.

These classes will start at the very beginning with you learning to keep the hoop moving around your waist and working up, over the weeks, to being able to move the hoop around your body, on and off body moves, leg hooping, and arm hooping as well as a little foot hooping. These classes are aimed at adults. Come and join in the new exercise craze!

Combine a talented hooper, a camera and an empty swimming pool...

...and this is what you could get. A video with moments of pure inspiration, pure madness and pure mesmerisation. I love it. It gives me the same feeling as dancing in puddles, jumping into a river or standing on the top of a mountain in a strong wind.

Thank you for sharing this video of you hooping Marianna de Sanctis and thank you for filming it Ingrid Chikhaoui & Manue Fleytoux.

Beth Lavinder - another of my hooping heros

There are so many things I love about Beth's hooping style, her elegance, fluidity, gentle beauty to name but a few. Beth also has the most beautiful hair that flows out around her as she spins.

I'm utterly in love with her practice space too and so wish I had a place that stunning to play in.

I love Khan and his beautiful hooping

Khan has long been an inspiration to me. I love his style of hooping and his choice of music in this video. Oh how wish I lived closer to you Khan!

Such a pretty hooper! X

Bring who you are into what you do.

Baxter is a well know person in the hooping world and I believe the reason for that is because he brings something different to hooping and is very eloquent in expressing himself both through his hooping and his words. Now everyone that hoops will show a little of themselves whilst they hoop, but people like Baxter really do give all of themselves to the experience of hooping and who they are just radiates out of them in their movements and flow.

If you give wholeheartedly to what you are doing, whatever prop you choose to express yourself with, it is inevitable that others will want to follow you and emulate you. If you seek to be someone that others emulate you probably putting more of your heart into being popular than into what you do, so will never capture peoples imagination.

Dance your own dance

Have you ever noticed that when a group of people learn a prop together they seem to all end up with a similar style of using that prop. I noticed it when I would go to big poi gatherings. You could pick out the people who practised a lot together, or who followed one of the poi websites over another, as their styles of spinning were very similar.

The same is true of hooping. There are lot of videos on line, which you try to learn from and inevitably you do end up copying other peoples styles of doing moves when you are going through the learning process. Even when you watch some of the best hoopers, the people you look up to as innovators, you can get that feeling of, oh (s)he does that move the same way as him/her. It just seems to happen. There are moments in this video that nod towards many other hoopers styles, but then there are many more moments of just pure Malcolm Stuart style.

I guess what I'm saying here is, try to dance your own dance and use your prop in your own way. Try not to doggedly copy someone else's style as you learn. Take the move, learn how it works and then adapt it to have your own slant.

If you haven't seen Sharna Rose hoop....

... well here is a treat for you. I would strongly suggest you go to You Tube and search out all her other videos too. If you have seen Sharna hoop before you won't need any encouragement. Here is a fandangaly fabulous video to make your day.

I foresee a few new bruises coming up on my legs :-)
